National General Insurance originated from two companies.
Integon, a life insurance company, was established in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1920.
The second, Motors Insurance Company, founded in 1925 by General Motors;
Which aimed to provide damage coverage for GM vehicles sold by dealers and financed by GMAC (now Ally Financial).
In 1969, Integon Corp. transitioned into a holding company, specializing in insuring high-risk drivers.
Over time, it underwent several ownership changes and shifts in business focus.
GMAC announced its acquisition of Integon for $778 million in October 1997, following an initial $550 million deal in June 1997.
Subsequently, Integon became GMAC Insurance Personal Lines in 2000.
In 2006, General Motors sold 51% of GMAC to a Cerberus Capital Management affiliate.
By that time, 1,179 employees worked in Winston-Salem.
In 2009, American Capital Acquisition Corp., a unit of American Capital Partners LLC, acquired GMAC’s U.S. consumer property-casualty insurance business, known as GMAC Insurance Holdings, Inc.
On July 1, 2013, GMAC Insurance rebranded as National General Insurance.
In June 2014, the Winston-Salem operation relocated from downtown to Madison Park.
