Protective Life Insurance History
The company was established in 1907 and settled its first death claim in 1909.
Over the years, the company experienced several significant developments:
In 1927, a merger with Alabama National Insurance, led by Samuel Clabaugh, saw him become president of the combined entity, which retained the name Protective.
In 1937, leadership transitioned to Col. William J. Rushton.
In 1969, William “Billy” J. Rushton III, the son of Col. Rushton, took over as the president, overseeing a series of acquisitions that expanded Protective’s presence to all 50 states.
Drayton Nabers Jr. took on the role of CEO in 1992, and in 1993, Protective Life Corporation was listed on the New York Stock Exchange as “PL.
In 1997, Protective Life acquired West Coast Life.
Nabers retired in 2002, and John D. Johns, a graduate of Harvard Business School, became the president and CEO.
Johns held these positions until 2017 and also served as chairman of the board from January 2003 to November 2019.
He had been a director since May 1997 and an employee of the company and its subsidiaries since 1993.

In 2007, Protective Life celebrated its centennial, a year after acquiring Chase Insurance Group in 2006.
In 2013, the principal subsidiary, Protective Life Insurance, completed the acquisition of MONY Life Insurance Company.
And reinsured certain policies from MONY Life Insurance Company of America, with a total transaction price of $1.06 billion.
On July 1, 2017, Rich Bielen became the 7th president and CEO of Protective.
He joined the company in 1991 and assumed various roles, including chief investment officer and treasurer in 2002 and vice chairman and chief financial officer in 2007.
In January 2016, Bielen was appointed president and chief operating officer.
Protective Life Insurance Major Acquisition
On June 1, 2019, Protective achieved its largest transaction to date.
They acquired a substantial portion of the individual life and annuity business of Great-West Life & Annuity Insurance Company.
This deal represented an estimated capital investment of around $1.20 billion.
